New Gigs

Our Jazz Orchestra has a couple of new gigs coming up, including at Trumpets Jazz Club in Montclair and Somethin' Jazz Club (formerly Miles Cafe) in New York City. I've been frantically writing a new piece for the Trumpets gig, and we're also featuring new works by other band members, and even one of my own students (he's 10!) Come out and support live music!

New Works for Jazz Orchestra

I would like to invite you this Sunday, May 1st at 8pm, to Shea Auditorium of William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ. Shannon Baker and I will be presenting nearly two hours of new works, mostly with the William Paterson Jazz Orchestra.

The program includes my new "Phases of Water," an approx. 35-minute suite composed of three movements: "Snow," "Ice Storm," and "Rain." It will also include a re-arrangement of a short Bach Adagio as a tango for Jazz Orchestra.

The concert is free, and is sure to be a unique experience.

Erica Wins ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award

My 12-minute piece, "Rain" has won a 2011 ASCAP Young Jazz Composers Award this year. This is my first award from them (I received an Honorable Mention 2 years ago.) Rain was written for flute, clarinet, soprano sax, bass clarinet, vibes, 2 guitars, piano, bass, and drums, and was performed and recorded by Jim McNeely's Arranger's Combo in mid-2010. I wholeheartedly thank everyone who performed on this piece, and special thanks to Jim McNeely and Rich DeRosa for their help in bringing the piece to life.

Also, congrats to two other Eastman alum, Shauli Einav and Levi Saelua, who also received this honor this year.

I will receive the award this year in June, when ASCAP has their annual Jazz Hall of Fame in New York City.

Free Download of the Week!

Starting this week, there will be a free download every week of some clip, whether it be a scanned sketch, a "demo recording," a clip from our gig, etc.

Our first clip is from our recent Community of the Spirit gig at Puppets on July 14th, 2010. This is the transition from "Bay of Tsunu" to "Edge of the Mountains." It is a free improvisation between myself on piano and Shannon Baker on flute. Enjoy!

Erica Wins 1st Place the Zurich Jazz Orchestra Composer Competition

With my piece, "Gray Sky," I won 1st place in the Zurich Jazz Orchestra Composer Competition, chosen out of 48 entries around the world (6 of whom were finalists and attended the finale in JazzClub Moods, Zurich, Switzerland). I am honored to have heard such wonderful music by the other composers at the finale, and I've learned so much from them and the judges (Rainer Tempel, Frank Sikora, and George Gruntz.)
